We are getting a new roof put on, so the contractor is out here like they are building the Hoover Dam from dusk till dawn. Fine. What I didn't expect to see was a Porta Potty out my front door to accomodate the roofers. Thank God it isn't summertime. I wish I had a shot of them with these giant scrapers yesterday, sitting on the roof with foam rubber cushions to keep them from sliding off. I can't imagine how cold it is up there.

Krista,
My framer was a very bright guy, and speaking with him about how he chose his trade based on analysis of all the construction trades yiedled some insights I hadn't considered. Among other things, he gauged his time investment and effeciency in getting leads, winning bids, and keeping his crews scheduled and employed. He contrasted framing with roofing from a labor and profitability standpoint. For framing, you have 1-2 weeks worth of work for your crew for each job you land. For roofing, you tend to have 2-3 days. Therefore, you have to work a lot harder in terms of contacts, bids, etc to keep the pipeline full for roofing. Another insight I found was management costs of the labor. The sheet rock hangers got paid the same ammount as the finishers - about $5 per sheet. The hangers did my whole house 318 sheets in one day. The finishers took over a week. The contractor provided transportation and fed his crews on both those jobs. Their food and gatorade bills were over $100/ day. From profit standpoint, the hangers were way ahead as they made 1 trip and fed the crew once. I explain this to offer insight into the roofers working dawn to dusk to get it done. It's all about maximizing the benjamins. ; )
